Overview

The most expensive water damage is the kind you can't see. A slow leak inside a wall can quietly soak framing and insulation for weeks, leading to rot and mold before anything obvious appears. Catching it early saves money and protects your health. Here's what to watch for.

1. Stains and discoloration

Yellowish, brownish, or coppery stains on walls or ceilings are a classic sign of water moving where it shouldn't. They often look like irregular rings or spreading patches. (See also ceiling water stains: causes & when to worry.)

2. Bubbling, peeling, or cracking paint

When moisture gets behind paint or wallpaper, it loses adhesion - causing bubbling, blistering, peeling, or fine cracking. Wallpaper may start to lift at the seams.

3. A musty, earthy smell

That damp, "old basement" odor is one of the earliest clues, often appearing before any visible sign. It usually means moisture - and possibly mold - is present somewhere you can't see.

4. Soft or warped surfaces

Drywall that feels soft, spongy, or swollen to the touch has absorbed water. Baseboards and trim may warp or pull away from the wall.

5. Visible mold or mildew

Small spots of green, black, or white growth - especially near the floor, around windows, or in corners - point to a moisture source nearby. (See how to tell if you have mold behind your walls.)

6. A spike in your water bill

An unexplained jump in water usage with no change in habits can signal a hidden leak inside a wall or under a slab.

7. Warm or damp spots

A warm spot on a floor or a persistently damp area can indicate a hot-water line leak - common with slab leaks in San Jose homes.

What to do if you spot these

Don't ignore early signs hoping they'll dry out - hidden moisture feeds mold within 24-48 hours. A professional inspection uses moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the source without tearing open walls unnecessarily. We offer that inspection free.
