Overview
The most expensive water damage is the kind you can't see. A slow leak inside a wall can quietly soak framing and insulation for weeks, leading to rot and mold before anything obvious appears. Catching it early saves money and protects your health. Here's what to watch for.
1. Stains and discoloration

2. Bubbling, peeling, or cracking paint
When moisture gets behind paint or wallpaper, it loses adhesion - causing bubbling, blistering, peeling, or fine cracking. Wallpaper may start to lift at the seams.
3. A musty, earthy smell
That damp, "old basement" odor is one of the earliest clues, often appearing before any visible sign. It usually means moisture - and possibly mold - is present somewhere you can't see.
4. Soft or warped surfaces
Drywall that feels soft, spongy, or swollen to the touch has absorbed water. Baseboards and trim may warp or pull away from the wall.
5. Visible mold or mildew

An unexplained jump in water usage with no change in habits can signal a hidden leak inside a wall or under a slab.
7. Warm or damp spots
